LAMONT SOCIETY HISTORY

The Clan Lamont Society EST:1895

The Clan Lamont Society was formed in 1895. It's purpose is to keep alive the traditions and values of the Lamont clan and it's members. Every year the Society hosts a gathering, where members can meet and rekindle old friendships and make new ones. The Society and it's activities are organised by a Council, which is made up of the following: the Chief of the Clan, a President, two Vice-Presidents, six Councillors, the Secretary of the Society, the Treasurer of the Society, and the Editor of the Clan Lamont Journal. For more details on the current council members click here .

The President, and both Vice-Presidents hold their posts for 2 years, whilst Councillors hold theirs for 3. Each year two Councillors “retire” and only one of them may be re-elected to continue as a Councillor, whilst when a President or Vice-President “retires” they can't be re-elected back into the same post until one year has passed. The Society currently offers 3 kinds of membership – Life, Annual, and Retainers. The current cost of Life membership is £175, Annual membership is £30, and Junior/Retainer membership is £7. To join our Society please print off a copy of our membership form, and send it along with your cheque for the level of membership you want and a brief cover note on what your Lamont connection is to the address on the form.

In 1906 the Society erected a monument in Dunoon to commemorate the 1646 massacre when 36 Lamonts where hung from a tree by the neighbouring Campbell clan. At every gathering in Dunoon, the Society lays a wreath to commemorate their fallen kinsfolk. The Society also provides the Lamont Shield at the Cowal Highland Games. The shield is given to the best Juvenile (under 18) Solo Piper.
