Scottish Surnames:

As with most surnames in the world, traditional Scottish surnames were gained from a variety of sources. These sources included the location where an individual lived, the role they performed in society or in a number of cases who their fathers were. In Gaelic the term "Mac" means "son" and many Scottish surnames are prefixed by this, which has been shorten through time to "Mc".

As the majority of the Scottish population were illiterate, surnames were passed down by word of mouth and when written a variety of spellings were used with individul discrepancies being compounded by spelling mistakes in official documents. As such there now exist a variety of different surnames that have the same origins.

In addition clans often formed links and shared histories with other smaller groups and brought their surnames under the larger Clan barrier and name. Some clan members also changed their names in their own lifetimes to escape persecution and even death as a result of Clan warfare.
